Cubase 14 Joins Bitwig and PreSonus in Supporting Open DAW File Format
The world of digital music production is becoming more interconnected, thanks to DAWproject, an open and free file format designed to simplify project sharing between different Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). Initially launched in 2023 by Bitwig and PreSonus, DAWproject has now gained another major supporter—Steinberg’s Cubase 14.
This groundbreaking format eliminates the hassle of manually exporting and importing audio stems when transferring projects between DAWs. Instead, DAWproject preserves the entire project structure, including clips, tracks, channels, groups, audio, notes, automation data, and even the state of third-party plug-ins. This allows producers and musicians to move seamlessly between different software environments without disrupting their workflow.
A Unified Approach to Music Production
For years, producers have had to navigate cumbersome and time-consuming processes to collaborate across DAWs. Without a universal exchange format, users relied on exporting raw audio stems, often losing essential project data in the process.
DAWproject changes that by providing a standardized, DAW-agnostic container format. It includes not only audio and MIDI data but also metadata, automation, and plug-in states, all structured in XML. The format is designed to be future-proof, ensuring compatibility even as DAWs continue to evolve with different feature sets.
Growing Industry Support
Since its launch, DAWproject has been supported in Bitwig Studio 5.0.9 and Studio One 6.5, and with Cubase 14 now onboard, the momentum behind this initiative is growing. The addition of Cubase marks a significant step forward for producers who use multiple DAWs or collaborate with artists working in different software environments.
As more developers embrace this format, the music production industry moves closer to a truly open and flexible ecosystem.
